A good read

Since I am stuck working in an awfully quiet library today, I thought I would post some pictures of the Small Fry enjoying his own library books.

E and I try to hit the library once a week or so--usually on Saturday morning, so that he can burn off some energy and T can sleep without having to listen to the bloodcurdling screams of happiness and, sometimes, general unrest.

Out of each crop of 7-8 books there are some that are scorned and some that are loved.

The recent heavy hitters are a book about toes, a book about trains, a book about colors and the beloved "Which Puppy?" featured below. Although, this book is not nearly as loved as "Busy Buddies"--sweet Lord, we couldn't go anywhere without that title pasted to his little paw.

Anyway, pics below of an afternoon (or, 10 minutes, really) spent loving a good book.

Looking awfully rascall-y and I'm not sure why.

Babies v. Europa

Yesterday a friend and I decided that babies are lot like visiting Europe; a little too much like visiting Europe in some instances. If turned into a book, we would title it: "Europe=Baby Simulation."

Some similarities we discovered:

jetlag=nursing at night

obnoxious americans=baby who won't shut up and sleep

drunk guy in the Louvre=junior with reflux

indignant Frenchman who looks at you like you're worthless=toddler who doesn't want peas

store clerk who doesn't understand English=husband who doesn't know why you're crying postpartum

don't know the language=screaming baby

expensive and overpriced=expensive and overpriced

exchanging American currency=figuring out insurance forms

no refund for trip booked=no refund for baby

something you've got to do in life=something you've got to do in life

Rainbows and unicorns

This weekend was the loveliest of all lovely weekends; almost disturbing in the enjoyment it delivered.

Saturday involved...
...a sunny day actually toasty enough to wear a sundress straight out the gate.
...driving with the windows down and watching E's hair blow about.
...having another dizzy spell.
...a play date with CurlyGirl and her daughter, C
...a rest for all in the afternoon.
...using a new babysitter and seeing E ball up his fists with excitement when spotting her.
...going on a daydate with T to eat a fabulous meal and talk about a week's worth of tidbits.
...coming home from the daydate to find E and the babysitter chillin' like villians.
...visiting my parents and grandpa, who promptly wore E out.

Sunday entailed...
...talking a long walk to Starbucks with E in the stroller while T slept in.
...having pigs-in-a-blanket for T's Father Day breakfast.
...playing as a family in our living room.
...E taking a two and a half hour nap.
...getting five loads of laundry done before lunch.
...eating a picnic lunch with E at the pool and then swimming.
...having my parents surprise us there and again seeing E smile and shake with excitement upon spotting them in the parking lot.
...going to my parents house for a Father's Day dinner.
...making last minute dinner plans with a friend for Monday evening.
...heading to bed early to eat chocolate cake in the sheets.
...watching DVRed two episodes of Top Gear that made me laugh-cry.

Monday, don't even try to top this fabulousness.

Random useless tidbits

Tomorrow we are trying out a new babysitter (someone we know from E's daycare) and I'm feeling super anxious about it. What if she hurts E? What if she steals stuff? What if they don't have fun?

Each of these are fairly irrational (and I work through the reasoning in my head)--but I just get sooo weirded out by anyone except us and my parents watching him that I can't seem to stop the spiral of cootie thoughts.

Mantra: She is lovely. E thinks she's the cat's meow. They will have a good time. She won't rifle through our belongings.

****

I just had a mega dizzy spell and am very excited.

****

Workplace co-worker is making me the insane of all insanes. Thankfully, I'm not the only one feeling this way so I know it's not just me.

****

Scheduled a consult at a ears, nose and throat doctor to talk about E getting tubes in his ears (nine double ear infections since last August). The scheduler was an absolute beast o' matic.

Her: "At the request of your pediatrician, we scheduled E for a consult on Tuesday the 23rd at 11:00am." (Mind you they just set-up that appointment without even talking to me first about a good date/time.)

Me: "That's fine, but I want to give you a heads up that we probably won't be able to make it there until 11:15 or 11:20. I know that may affect other appointments scheduled."

"It will and you need to be here at 11:00am sharp. Arriving late impacts Dr. H and his other patients."

"Well, I'm aware of that but since I work during the day it won't be possible to arrive right at 11:00am."

(huffy now) "Fine. I'm going to need to schedule you on another day. Should I look at other dates?"

"Why don't you do that."

Bah.

****

Sam and I were chatting the other about how our boys are turning into trained monkeys and we LOVE it. Some things E is up to now:
  • If we give him the cordless phone, he holds it up to his ear/neck and says, "Hiiiiii."
  • When I ask him, "Where's George?" he walks over to his toy chest and pulls out his stuffed Curious George to give him kisses/pirhana bites on the nose.
  • He says "Buh-bye" and waves to people passing on the street
  • When we're walking up the stairs, he spots his picture and says "Ba-by."
  • He little fingers do the sign for "more"
  • Whenever he sees a lion in a book or in his room or the stuffed one we keep in the car, he says "RAWWRR!"
  • Near naptime or bedtime, he likes to pull a pillow off the couch or the blanket we keep in the living room down to the floor and put his head on it

Each of these enchant me and he could do them over and over and over again and they wouldn't get old.

****

This weekend will hopefully be chock-full of: playtime outside, naps to catch up on sleep, less humidity, time at the pool, kisses for fathers, dates for T and I, a full-on grocery store trip to actually buy food, T feeling appreciated on Father's Day, time away from the computer, smiles from E.

****

I have absolutely nothing planned for dinner and am waffling between wanting to order pizza or running out at lunch to pick something up that I can quickly make once home.

****

Have been craving DoubleStuffed Oreos for months now. I know that if I buy them that the spray of cookie crumbs and artificial frosting in my wake will scare even me. Therefore, I am holding out and not giving in.

****

Direct note to my friend A in Colorado: am sending a small package today. Keep your eye out for it!

****

This week T and I had a ComeToJesus about work, mainly his work. There are talks of giving him greater responsibility and a promotion, but with this would come more hours and more travel, some of which would be overseas. Even the possible opportunity for relocating overseas.

This made me feel lots of different things...Appreciative that he would ask me how I felt about this before even telling the higher ups that he's interested (I gave it two thumbs up since he looked pretty excited). Making sure I am okay with what that would mean with potentially more kidlets roaming the range but him in Europe for a few weeks (again, not something too arduous given my parents are nearby and always willing to help. PTL.). Excited for him because it would mean more responsibility in an area that he's interested in with people he likes working for. And mainly thankful that they see value in him and his work to carve out a place for him that has longevity.

We'll see.

****

I feel so very poofy. Because of this poofiness, yesterday I wore pants that when I took them off--left the imprint of my zipper, buttonhole and seam on my body. All red and hungry looking too.

Not a hot look.

****

Last night my abdomen was fluttering in what was probably bizarre-o muscle spasms but what made me wonder if, a la Jack or something from Discovery Health, I had suddenly grown eight babies and they were all moving about in a spastic fashion.

****

Am trying to drink more water each day but failing miserably.

Hea.vens

From my friend loveball, who is both lovely and inappropriate all in one tiny package, comes a website that made me snort laugh at work.

The highlights:

(510): he said he didn't have a condom.(415): and you said?(510): that that's fine cause i was ready to be a mom. yeah - he magically had a condom he forgot about after that.

847): i took some ambien and I TRIPPED out...i went into my mom's room to say goodnight and i don't remember anything...she said that i got really pissed at her because we were living in the Keebler elf tree and she was visiting other trees, then i started laughing hysterically and she goes "whats so funny?" and i go "there are 7 people sitting on my knees" and she goes "doesn't that hurt?" and i said "no we're sitting in a bowl" and then i capped it off and said "join the crazy train bro" and passed out.

(512): i just sat at a stop sign for 10 minutes waiting for it to turn green. i need to STOP SMOKING THIS SHIT.

(416): Going to spend my cab money on more shots and just take the ambulance home

(705): Fantastic night. drank beer from a wine bottle, danced on a van, chased a llama, and fell from a fence

(613): I just saw a hobo shake a payphone until it spat out a bunch of quarters. what a champ.

(724): also, i may or may not be wearing a cape right now. hint: i am.

(402): I used a bag of wine as a pillow last night.

(817): Did you put 9lbs of birdseed all over my car?(1-817): You weighed it?

(315): he saw my "i like bacon" magnet on the fridge and i told him how much i love meat, then we started making out
(607): what a beautiful fairy tale

(773): Dude im not sure whos apartment i woke up in but i just showered here and their shampoo in phenomenal

(402): lol whn u cming hre I nd 2 c ur fce
(1-402): IF YOU TEXT ME ONE MORE SHORTENED VERSION OF A WORD, THE ONLY THING YOU'LL SEE IS MY FIST IN YOUR FACE.

(978): i just used the Cadillac of toilet papers. For a minute i actually forgot i was even wiping my ass....i thought i was floating butt first into heaven

(253): Well for starters i'm drinking vodka out of a bell pepper.

(918): The good thing about walking home in a dress on sunday morning is that people mistake my walk of shame as a walk to God.

(661): Kirsten Dunst is sitting next to me in a bar in NYC
(831): Tell her I want my money back for Elizabethtown.

After my own heart

Running closely behind cheese, cheap pedicures, the movie "Money Pit" and super soft sheets--is my love of vacuuming and Swiffering.

I am obsessed with clean floors and think there is nothing worse than feeling crumbies stuck to the bottom of my foot while inside.

We have a no shoes-thing in our house because, hello!, have you seen what sits on the sidewalk? Poo, spit, germs, other gross stuff.

Yuck.

Anyway, vacuuming is fun because it's a fast way to make something clean AND it sucks up crumbs AND it makes nice lines in the rug.

(I never said I wasn't anal.)

Swiffering is fab because it smells good and is cheap and gets into the nooks and crannies of my kitchen.

E discovered the Swiffer yesterday morning and took to it right away; swinging it around like a majorette. In a fervor, he did clock himself with it. That only happened once.

"What? Can't a boy like clean floors?"

Great, good, suck

Great
I made a Mexican casserole (which a co-worker and I call The Casserole) last night, and I made it full fat. We're talking regular cheese, regular soup with WHOLE milk and regular tortillas. It was creamy and cheesy and gone in about 20 minutes.

E slept until 8:45am on Sunday. It was my morning to get up with him and I couldn't even believe my good luck. Such a thing has never happened before.

Swimming at the pool yesterday and, while on break, E tore it up with his concession stand lunch. Like his mom, he's hard put to turn away a freshly grilled cheeseburger with ketchup.

The wedding we attended on Saturday night had a candy bar. Love!

Only one month until mega-family vacation. Am super excited.

Good
Crazy productive projects done around the house this weekend--blinds hung in E's room, lots o' gardening, new toilet part, laundry galore.

E's little body sucks up the sun like nothing I've ever seen. Despite being slathered in SPF 60 whenever we go outside, the creases in his arm and leg rolls are distinctly lighter.

The best, most uncomfortable exchange ever witnessed in a Blockbuster where the customer confirmed that he picked out that particular movie because "it said on the back that it was 'sexy'! I love sex! Sex! Sex! Sex!" I may have snort laughed while waiting in line.

Suck
"The International" with Clive Owen. Ugh. I bailed after only an hour.

This week's US Weekly--bleak news week, apparently.

My hair is in a jenky growing out phase which T confirmed kind of looks like the business-up-front, party-in-the-back.

Wednesday, June 10

It's time for the percolator

My thighs look like a cross between a junkie's arm and a colander.

Last night my mom plunged a needle into the upper right quadrant of my butt cheek.

I have been violated eight ways from Sunday by my RE's ultrasound wand.

Tomorrow morning T has to drop off his creepy little brown paper bag.

Two weeks from Friday I find out if I'm pregnant.

****

I've been debating whether or not to go there on this here blog. Like Hillary mentioned, when do you spill the beans?

Our struggle to get knocked up isn't exactly a secret, but when you post your business out on the internets--it becomes even less of a secret. And for (who I hope is, anyway) the one soul from work who has been given super sleuth access to the blog--well, Fanny, you're not aloud tell a soul. Otherwise? Death. At the very least, I steal your office chair and replace it with a Wheely Bug.

Threats aside, T and I waffled for a long time when to get back on the horse. My thoughts were to venture when I still felt kind of tired; thinking that ripping the band-aid off being fully rested would hurt like a mofo. Late night feedings not such a distant memory?--well then, march on. At least that's my twisted reasoning.

Age has also been a consideration since T is a tidgy older.

So we saw Dr. EBFS back in February and he was ready to start crack a lackin' with my March cycle, picking up with the protocol that helped us get pregnant with E. Our eyes kind of bugged out since that seemed kind of fast. Plus I have issues with being inside all the time. And if I got knocked up in March and had a baby in Novemberish...well...I'm just not sure I'd survive the winter AND flu season with a new born and not-quite-two-year-old. I feel slightly nauseous just thinking about being inside.all.the.time.

Shudder.

Anyway, we thought June sounded a-okay. What the hell, right? I can do this.

In all honesty, I'm pretty excited and pretty darn freaked out at the same time. Excited, because yea! babies! I probably won't accidentally kill this one since I actually know a little bit more than the last go round.

Freaked out because, yeah, I responded really well to the injections and it is what Dr. EBFS called "a strong cycle." We're talking lots o' follicles. He's a conservative doctor and still decided to not cancel the cycle, so I feel good about it and trust him--but I would be lying if I didn't say that T and I occasionally give the nervous giggle about potentially having more than one egg fertilize.

Heh.

Heh.

Holy hell...that scares me.

And I've decided to not even venture down that road mentally because I've got bum eggs right? So, I'm just going to count on most of them being stuck up and snotty and only one cooperating.

(Currently promising to no longer create story lines for my eggs. My bad.)

Anyway, that's the skinny. We'll see how it all shakes out come two weeks from now.

Heavens.

Weekendy nonsense

Our weekend was mellow and quiet and full of us moving about the house chasing a small baby playing with balloons. Seriously. If we removed everything else from the house (even his beloved whole milk and roast beef) but left the balloons from his birthday party, he'd be a happy camper.

New tricks discovered this weekend: If we point to a lion and ask what sounds it makes, E makes the best "rawrrrr" sound. His speed is picking up and he can now sort of run, but mainly in circles around the dining room table. He also now uses the "more" sign language when he wants more food at dinner. He holds the phone up to his neck (ear is tricky) and says "hiiiii." All in all the cuteness was at dangerously high levels Saturday and Sunday.

T and I lounged a lot. He worked out. We had my parents over for dinner. I finished the second Twilight book; furiously reading during E's naps on Saturday and Sunday. Visits to Target and Costco.

Oh, and one super enthusiastic spagetti dinner Sunday night that resulted in the the onesie being stripped off E and thrown into the wash.

Get down, get down

Below are some pics from E's party last Sunday. We had it at a park and then went to the adjoining zoo right after. The weather was glorious, the cupcakes (courtesy of my gal Starr Fish) were rockin' and E's first year was celebrated.

Small world, nice brows

After I finished college, I moved to Atlanta to do AmeriCorps. I wasn't ready to go to grad school and, let's face it, with an English Literature degree under your belt--there isn't much a recent college grad is qualified to do except move somewhere else and try to help some people.

So, I moved down South and was pretty damn poor. I think I made $300 a week. But I had three roommates and no bills other than my living expenses, so it wasn't as bleak as it seems. Plus cost of living in Atlanta circa 1998? Dude. Che.ap.

There were a handful of times I maximized the fact that my roommate worked at a ridiculously tasty pizzeria, but sure as shit I had enough money for the important things--like expertly shaped eyebrows at a fancy salon.

I'd always plucked my own brows (not always well, mind you) and one day decided that this should probably left to the professionals. I couldn't spring a lot on fancy highlights and expensive cuts, but I could definitely spring $20 for well-done brows.

So, I started going to this super swank salon near my apartment. The eyebrow guy there was named Aric and he was the nicest man evah. Compliments galore. This is where I also came to the important conclusion that the best done brows are plucked, not waxed. Waxing takes off too much and the aesthetician doesn't have much control over the shape. Plucking?--more precise.

Anyway, he was sweet and fabulous at what he did and we would talk makeup because he used to work for Bobbi Brown in New York and was working on developing his own makeup line. He even gave me samples (they were great!).

Cut to the present and I'm reading my latest Southern Living magazine (damn you, Cottage Living for going under!) one evening this week. They did a spotlight on the woman who developed Spanx. She happens to live in Atlanta and was discussing her favorite stores.

First one listed? Aric C. Aric of eyebrows fame from 1998! Apparently, he has his own line that is super fabulous! Go figure!

This makes me happy. And wishing he lived closer.

Love/hate Wednesday

Love: At the doctor's appointment this morning, E was patient and happy and chock full of smiles

Hate: Verdict?--two ear infections again. Talk of tubes are in the works.

Love: Checking the bank balance online and feeling slightly reassured

Hate: May was a tres spendy month for the K household (new car, birthday party, drugs--fertility not recreational, misc.). June and July better not be getting any smart ideas.

Love: New car smell is kind of nice

Hate: I am so hungry. So hungry that I would even consider eating broccoli.

Love: Pants that are loose

Hate: Upon wake-up, looking down to see a ginormous chip out of the nailpolish on my toe. How did this happen? I've just been sleeping for the past 8 hours?!

Love: An upcoming weekend that is quiet

Hate: It appears that I either a) swallowed a bunch of razors or b) have the worst sore throat of all eternity

Love: Last night T and I actually went to bed and fell asleep at the SAME TIME. This hasn't happened in a large number of months

Hate: It seems that along with the sore throat, I also have a jenky headache and bizarre nose action

Love: It is June

Hate: It is 55 degrees in June

Love: Considering what to do this weekend

Two thumbs up

So, here's the thing. Husbands are tricky animals. They may seem extremely simple but are sometimes amazingly complex.

Take T, for example. Extraordinarily sensitive, able to switch out lights and kitchen faucets, makes up his own words to songs and nursery rhymes and has been known to read my US Weekly to brush up on the Jon and Kate dramatics.

A well-rounded soul.

He can also sometimes drive me intensely insane, but I'm pretty sure I do the same to him. Probably more often.

Lately, I've been struck with a handful of husbands who are super stellar and I think they deserve a shout-out. So, in no particular order, I give you:

J (husband to my best friend since 5th grade, CurlyGirl). J works harder than perhaps any other man ON THE EARTH. For real. He's a machine. He always has been. He works a ridiculous schedule at all hours of the day and mainly night practically every day of the week. In the few hours he's not working or sleeping and with whatever energy he has left, he's spending time with CurlyGirl and their daughter C. Or hanging curtain rods. Or painting their living room. Or going to afternoon movies on a daydate.

M (husband to my fabulous friend Red Door and father to E's friend B). I used to work with M and we would always kid him about the little notes that Red Door would pack in his lunch. Heh. It was funny to see the little folded notes in his special tupperware, but he never showed us what the notes said. M is an honorable man in every sense of the word. He understands what's right and respectable and treasures Red Door and B an incredible amount.

B (husband to a super sweet gal, S). I've never met B but recently he gave S the most amazing gift. It was a gift that he socked away money in order to give it to her. Money that could have been spent on a million other things--even himself-- but that he instead decided to give S what he knew she wanted but didn't think they could afford. It was thoughtful and kind and a sacrifice and, though I've never met him, I think is a good indicator of how he treats S and their son T everyday.

J (husband to my new friend, pseudostoops). Again, I've never met him, but I love a thoughtful gift giver who is purposeful in deciding what to give others. He not only recently learned Wordpress on the sly but then redesigned and spruced up pseudostoops' blog. As she put it, "...he secretly spent hours building something I’d offhandedly mentioned that I wanted."

So while it may be the men who are crap husbands (to say the least) who get the most press...it may instead be time to give men who are great a thumbs up.
