Gut drop #1: school number appearing on my phone.
Gut drop #2: the school social worker introducing himself to you.
But, as it turns out, the social worker wants to "train" Ezra to work with a classmate whom Ezra has shown some interest in befriending and helping. The classmate has a number of physical and learning impairments, but--according to the social worker--Ezra goes out of his way to help him in the lunch room, give him high-fives, say "hello," and asks to be his reading buddy.
So Mr. Andrew is going to coach Ezra on other ways to help this classmate, both socially and academically, that are appropriate for age six.
Kindness is so important to me and though I feel like I do so many things wrong in parenting Ezra, I feel as if imparting the lesson of kindness to others might be something that is going okay.

Oh, K. YOUR BOY. I am tearing up, he is just so dear.
BUDDY. This is just too much. His precious heart, indeed. This word can sound so trite, but he is just so special. He is. Adults won't do that kind of thing, even.
THIS IS THE BEST. Your boy is the best. Well, tied with Iris, anyways.
Oh that's perfect. K. Oh. How beautiful.
he is the absolute best, K. You've done an amazing job ... and he's just fantastic as a whole.
Your kids are awesome, and it speaks to the examples set by you & T. It's what matters the most... on good days, bad days, despite doubts and worries and mistakes... the good is spilling over, and your kids' lives are having a positive influence on other kids' lives, and that's seriously the best thing. High fives to E and all of you! xo
I just had this long conversation with our school librarian (this is her first time as librarian, she was in special ed for many many years prior) this morning about disability kids. We talked about how in our day (and I am older than you), the disabled kids were kept entirely separate from the rest of the school. I think that was such a disservice to the regular abled kids to be distanced from those who are "different". What a great opportunity to realize we're all just human beings, each with our own special needs of various kinds. It's so much easier to find common ground when you can get right in there and make a new friend. Bravo to Ezra, your special boy.
My oldest son is in second grade and has Down syndrome. His school follows a pretty successful inclusion model where there is facilitated interactions between children with special needs and their typical peers. I love that because it's great for all the kids, but I love even more the organic friendships that have developed between my son and his schoolmates. There are some really wonderful kids out there like your Ezra. If the friendship flourishes I would encourage you to reach out to the parents and let them know that Ezra enjoys playing with their child. I bet it would mean the world to them.
Best ever! Totes made me tear up and wish that everyone could be as kind as he is. What a sweetheart.
This is so great! His heart, his kindness, his generosity - that comes from you and T.
Keep being awesome, Ezra! <3
Oh, come on! That is so wonderful, and something to be so proud of. Especially since it's nearly impossible to feel like we're doing good jobs as parents, so it really helps to hear tis sort of stuff from an outside source. Little E will make a wonderful difference for this other kid!
Just a little something in my eye - excuse me a minute...
HOW FREAKING SWEET.
What a sweetheart!
Delurking to say great job to Ezra AND Mom and Dad-you rarely hear of such kindness in someone his age.I am about to tear up over here!
Congratulations. How wonderful and completely unsurprising.
I love this so much! Could you keep us posted on how it goes?
This is fantastic. Between him and Sassy Iris, I basically think you're Mother of the Year. And I mean that seriously! You done good.
He and you and his school are amazing. Thank you for sharing him with us.
Holy cow. Amazing & sweet story!
I love you and I love your children and man, that boy is one special child.
What a wonderful thing to hear about your child. I would choose kindness over basically any other quality.
